Barri G\u00f2tic<\/a> retains a labyrinthine street plan, with many small streets opening out into squares.\u00a0From the very heart of the city, the Gothic quarter beats at each step we take. It is the district with the highest density of historical buildings, shops, hotels, tourists, tales and thieves.<\/p>\nAll in all, 2000 years of history in a passionate walk. Many of the buildings date from Medieval times, some from as far back as the Roman settlement of Barcelona. Remains of the squared Roman Wall can be seen around Tapineria and Sots-Tinent Navarro to the north, Avinguda de la Catedral and Pla\u00e7a Nova to the west and Carrer de la Palla to the south. El Call, the medieval Jewish quarter, is located within this area too.\u00a0Most of the quarter is closed to regular traffic although open to service vehicles and taxis.\u00a0The Gothic Quarter is one of two extremely popular pickpocketing hotspots in Barcelona, the other being La Rambla. It is a major problem in both areas of the city. Tourists are advised to be wary when in these areas.<\/p>\n
